Sun at Six

There are few things we love more than classic joinery. The end-grain contrast on a well-crafted through tenon. The precision and elegance of a dovetail. And the seamlessly striking custom joints crafted by many of our producers. But thousands of years before these joints were a twinkle in the eye of Western woodworkers, Chinese craftsmen had developed their own method of joinery leveraging expertly cut, puzzle-like locking joints that disappeared from sight once assembled. Because local wood was fickle and huge swings in humidity rendered nails and screws useless, joints were built to last through sheer mechanical strength.

Today, this centuries-old tradition is on the brink of disappearing forever. The complex joints are expensive and difficult to cut and few craftsmen remain who possess the specialized knowledge required.

Brooklyn design studio Sun at Six is working to change that. By combining the precision and craft of ancient Chinese woodworking with refreshingly modern designs they're hoping to keep the tradition alive. In fact, all of the furniture they produce is made by hand by traditional joinery masters from Guangzhou, China. Not only that, but the leather they use is handmade by family-run tanneries in Italy, the wood is dried and sealed by hand in their own shop, and each product is finished with a house-made tung oil per Chinese tradition. They are the definition of handcrafted, and we're proud to have them as a partner.
